The Crusades from an Arab Perspective

“The Crusades: An Arab Perspective” is a four-part documentary that recounts the Crusades through Arab eyes, from the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 to its recovery by Salah ad-Din and the end of the wars in 1291.
Part one examines the First Crusade and the fall of Jerusalem.
The series shows that the Crusades were driven not only by religion but also by Europe’s economic and political crises. Europe faced droughts, social unrest, and a power struggle between the pope and kings. Meanwhile, the Muslim world dominated the Mediterranean and enjoyed prosperity and cultural vibrancy.
In contrast, 11th-century Europe was poor, conflict-ridden, and structured around a feudal system where less than 1% of nobles owned all agricultural land, while 99% of the population lived as landless serfs. For many Europeans, the wealthy and flourishing East represented opportunity and abundance making the call for a “holy war” appealing and widely supported.
