Al-Azhar
This series sheds light on the historical background of Al-Azhar, from its founding in the Fatimid era to the present day.
Originally, Al-Azhar was established as a political institution designed to serve the interests of its Fatimid founders, who sought to use it as a powerful tool to promote Shi’a doctrine in Egypt, at a time when Egyptians tended to favor Sunni Islam. However, as the political landscape changed, the religious role of Al-Azhar evolved as well, eventually becoming the strongest Sunni authority for more than ten centuries.
The series traces the history of this sacred institution, analyzing how its role has shifted over time in response to political developments. It also highlights its significance as a comprehensive educational institution that has produced thousands of prominent scholars who have shaped human knowledge and thought.
